Ricardo Iznaola - Concert Etudes by Ricardo Iznaola
$17.50 - Book/CD Set 99419BCD
Check Out Now
This collection for solo classic guitar includes a set of ten Etudes-Homages, written between 1970 and 1977, and the tone poem Death of Icarus (Etude No. 11), written in 1982. The Etudes-Homages represent the composer's personal exploration of Romantic virtuosity applied to the guitar, written during an important formative period in the composer's life. As such, they are not only studies in advanced instrumental techniques, but also studies in style. Each of the studies borrows the essence, if not the letter, of the composer honored in the homage, but seen through a wide angle lens that provides context not necessarily present in the output of those composers. Death of Icarus is a tone poem written in memory of the great guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza. Its open ended conclusion underlines the spirit of curiosity, optimism, and risk-taking that defines the esthetics of the Romantic movement in general. 56 pages.

Dr. Jovan Jovicic is one of the greatest twentieth-century Yugoslav guitar pioneers. It is by no means an exaggeration to say that, thanks to him, today a large part of the creative and interpretive work being done in all six republics of the former Yugoslavian federation is focused on the expressive possibilities of the classic guitar. This collection of selected concert guitar works by Jovan Jovicic includes most of the pieces which the artist himself performed and recorded during more than 50 years of his successful career. This is the first integral publication ever printed outside of Jovicic' s native country in which the music is adapted, revised and arranged exactly according to the composer's interpretation. 102 pages.

A Renaissance Christmas by James Kalal
$14.75 - Book/CD Set 99763BCD
Check Out Now
The music selected for this book seems to lift you gently back to by-gone days to an era more leisurely paced than our own. This collection for solo classic guitar focuses first and foremost on early Christmas music and is enhanced by appropriate cover art, biblical text and poetry dating from this exciting period. The selections are festive to listen to while providing arrangements ranging from the traditional "easier to learn" lute solos to more advanced settings with today's harmonies. Each piece is cloaked in the special beauty and warmth that is characteristic of the guitar. A "mix and match" approach in the arrangements provides an added dimension for your enjoyment. For example, What Child is This/Greensleeves begins with an olden lute version followed by interludes that segue into other sections. Seven of the eight pieces in the book are recorded on the accompanying CD for your listening pleasure and to guide you in interpreting the pieces. Written in standard notation only. 32 pages.

Franz Schubert Arranged for Guitar  by Franz Schubert & Javier Calderon
$17.50 - Book/CD Set 99158BCD
Check Out Now
There have been few previous examples of guitar versions of Schubert' piano music, and practically no attempts to transcribe a complete set of pieces, as Caldern has done here with the six pieces of Schubert's Moments Musicaux. These pieces are superb examples of Schubert's mastery in the miniature form, true "musical moments" of mood and feeling. Two other pieces complete this collection, which also includ notes on the preparation and performance of the pieces in English, German, and Spanish. The music is in standard notation only with a CD of performances of the pieces by the arranger. 48 pages.

Waltzes for Guitar by James Edwards
-Out Of Print -

This book reflects the rhythmic grace and melodic charm that a good waltz provides. The waltz descended from the 18th century Austrian Landler, in which a sliding action of the feet is a characteristic feature. The waltz first appeared around 1770 and soon became a hit all over Europe. Dancers filled the ballrooms, whirling to the orchestra all night and into the morning. This popularity encouraged the best composers to supply waltzes for the enthusiastic revelers. Schubert, Chopin, Brahms and Johann Strauss Jr. were among the many who answered the call. A critic listening to the Strauss orchestra was impressed with the virtuosity and piquant interpretations which included subtle pauses, exciting rhythmic accents and tempo changes. It is strongly recommended that one listen to recordings of pianists and orchestras to get a feel for the style. Selections include: On The Beautiful Blue Danube and Zither Waltzes (Strauss); Valse Lente from Coppelia (Delibes); Waltz in A Minor (Chopin); Valse Sentimentale and Six Viennese Landler (Schubert); Russian Waltz (Expectation) (Anon); Las Dos Hermanitas and Grand Vals (Tarrega); Spanish Waltz and Vals (Ferrer); and Waltz in E Minor (Sor). These beautiful pieces are not just dance music but also great contributions to the musical repertoire. All of these melodies are featured on the companion CD. 88 pages.
