Chopin for Acoustic Guitar by Richard Yates

Frederic Chopin was one of the most original and influential composers in history. Although he only lived 39 years, he wrote music that has thoroughly embedded itself in our culture. His melodies are often instantly familiar to us and show a profound lyric sense. Many qualities of Chopin's music are ideal for guitar transcription. He wrote pieces that are short with a manageable range. The textures are mostly single melody lines with harmonic accompaniment without the complex counterpoint that can be so difficult on the guitar. His music is often soft, intimate, subtle, and full of naunces of articulation, dynamics, and phrasing. These qualities transfer quite naturally to the guitar. While remaining as faithful as possible to the composer's musical intentions, these pieces experienced some modification that is noted in the provided performance notes. Intermediate in difficulty, this book assumes the player has basic knowledge of the guitar and familiarity with either standard music notation or guitar tablature. Selections include: Prelude Op. 28, No. 7; Prelude Op. 28, No. 20; Prelude Op. 28, No. 4; Cantabile; Mazurka Op. 6, No. 2; Prelude Op. 28, No , 15; Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2; Nocturne Op. 15, No. 3; Nocturne Op. 37, No 1; and Nocturne Op. 55, No. 1. All of these beautiful pieces are included on the companion CD. 88 pages.

$24.50 - Compact Disc 98411CD
$47.95 - Book/CD Set 98411CDP
This collection presents, for the first time, the complete Mazurkas of Frédéric Chopin arranged for solo classical guitar. Representing Chopin at his most distinctive and personal, the mazurka is the only form the composer embraced throughout his lifetime. The pieces are unimaginably varied and colorful, ranging from brief and vigorous dances to deep and complex extended works. Always achingly melodic and featuring surprising harmonies not evident in his other compositions, the Mazurkas are a true monument to Chopin's genius. These new arrangements were prepared with rigorous fidelity to the originals, while never sacrificing true playability. Careful attention to every detail of execution combined with thorough notes on each piece and the folk dance tradition that inspired them to make this unique offering truly user-friendly. Musically beautiful, idiomatic and accessible, this monumental collection is a breathtaking addition to the guitar repertoire. Written in standard notation only. The 3-CD set features guitarist Stephen Aron performing his arrangements of all 51 of the Mazurkas, as they appear in the book. Overall Difficulty: Intermediate. 256 pages.

This solo piece for classic guitar is a musical theme with five variations based on an ancient nursery melody very popular in Spain and Spanish America. This musical theme is based on an ancient Spanish romance, whose oldest form appears in a gothic parchment dating from the 15th century. The most recent or modern version of this romance is from the last third of the 19th century. The version given here, "Little Coal-Heaver Boy," is one of the best known. This arrangement was a mandatory piece in the thirteenth edition of the renowned International Guitar Contest sponsored by French Radio in 1987-1988. These variations were dedicated to Robert J. Vidal, contest founder and were composed in Puerto Rico in the year 1986. They are presented here in notation only. The recording was made in 1988 by Scott Tennant. 12 pages.

Gregorian Chants for Acoustic Guitar by Steven Eckels

Inspired by the intimate relationship Native Americans have their culture and music, Steve Eckels probed the music on his Judeo Christian roots. The result of his quest is this book of guitar transcriptions of nine tracks from the popular choral recording Chant by the Benedictine monks of Santo Domingo de Silo, Spain plus a tenth chant from a 1940 Episcopal hymnal. A harmonization variation and suggested "improvisations" are offered for each chant. Steve Eckels is well known for his full-sounding settings for the guitar. All of these arrangements lie well on the fretboard and appear in both standard notation and tablature. This book is classified as intermediate in difficulty due to the unusual bar line-free notation of the original chant melody. The player will be challenged to develop a feel for plainsong rhythm to properly render these pieces. 80 pages.

$26.50 - Book/CD Set 98711CDP

This is the first compilation of guitar music for a right hand technique that includes the little finger. The 12 complete compositions include original pieces by Charles Postlewate, transcriptions of piano pieces by Claude Debussy, arrangements of Peruvian popular songs, and new editions of standard repertoire pieces - two studies by Fernando Sor and the beautiful tremolo study by Agustön Barrios, An Alm for the Love of God. Postlewate also includes excerpts of two other standard repertoire pieces by Federico Moreno Torroba and Heitor Villa-Lobos to show the advantage of using the little finger. These pieces demonstrate new right hand techniques for the classical guitar that use the little finger in the playing of scales, chords, arpeggios, tremolos and harmonics. They also show the advantage of using the little finger for speed, accuracy, strength and balance. All of these compositions are recorded by Postlewate on the accompanying 60 minute CD, Homage To Villa-Lobos - MB 98711CD. This book is a companion to MB 98710 - Right Hand Studies For Five Fingers, also by Charles Postlewate. Text in English and Spanish. Music in standard notation only. Overall Difficulty:  Intermediate.
